Total Project Budget: $253,000 (additional funding from the City and the Downtown Evanston business district budget).

Project Description: The landscaping project involved upgrading 122 planters and beds throughout the Downtown Evanston business district. Improvements included the installation of approximately 16,000 square feet of steel mesh to mitigate rodent infestations, new soil, over 2,200 perennials, and 230 shrubs. An additional 40 tons of slate chips were installed in ground-level beds.

Scope of Work: The project covered areas around Sherman Plaza, the Evanston Public Library, Sherman Avenue, Chicago Avenue, Orrington Avenue, Church Street, Oak Avenue, and Maple Avenue. All work was completed in July/August.

Impact: The revitalized planters have significantly improved the aesthetics of Downtown Evanston, leading to overwhelmingly positive feedback from residents and visitors. Going forward, the Downtown Evanston business district will manage routine maintenance through its annual landscaping budget.

Total Project Budget: $100,000 (additional funding from sponsorships and the Downtown Evanston business district budget).

Project Description: The Downtown Summer Sounds was a free outdoor concert series held every Thursday evening at Fountain Square from July 11 to September 26. The event featured diverse musical genres, with local nonprofits involved in the selection of performers and activation of the event area. For three evenings, the concerts coincided with the Downtown Evanston Thursday Night Market, featuring artists, makers, and retailers from the regional community.

Impact: The concert series attracted hundreds of attendees each night, generated positive community feedback, and supported Evanston businesses. As a sponsor, Northwestern was recognized in promotional materials, on stage banners, and at each concert. The success of the series has led to plans for its return in 2025.

Community Impact and Outcomes

Both projects were met with enthusiastic support from the community. The landscaping upgrades have visibly transformed key areas of Downtown Evanston, creating a more vibrant and appealing atmosphere for residents, businesses, and visitors alike. Meanwhile, the Downtown Summer Sounds concert series has fostered a sense of community, provided entertainment, and driven foot traffic to local businesses, thereby contributing to the economic vitality of the area.
